Resize your photos and images |
Digital photos are usually taken at a high resolution, corresponding to a large file size. It is often necessary to resize them, before sending them by mail or uploading to a web site. Different programs resize images in different ways; you can find here a list of few common ones. (more will follow)
Attention!: always save the resized image with a different filename, or in a different folder, not to overwrite the original.
- Online sites: If you are in a hurry and dont have a software available you can use an online site, as the Resize 2 mail one. Free to use and with an easy interface, it resizes and/or crops your image, and you can then save it again on your computer to use it.
- Paint: If you don't have access to graphics editing software nor to the internet you can use Microsoft Paint to resize images as follows:
Right click on the file name, to Open it in Paint
- On the Image menu, click Stretch/Skew.
- Change the Horizontal and Vertical values for stretch to the desired percentages. They must be the same if you want the image to remain proportional.
- Click Ok and then use the command File, Save As, to save the resized image with a different name.
- Picasa: Google's Picasa can be used for simple image editing. Photos can be resized using the Export command, in the bottom toolbar.
You can multiselect any number of photos by clicking on them keeping the Cntrl key pressed,
- Provide a name for the folder containg the resized photos, as the original will not be overwritten.
- Define the horizontal size of the new photos.
- Click OK
- Photoshop: You can resize the images in many different ways. To reduce the file size you have to reduce the number of pixels as follows:
Use the menu Image, Image Size
- Enter the horizontal size in pixels (or percent); the vertical one will be automatically scaled.
- Verify that Resample is checked
- Click Ok and then use the command File, Save As, to save the resized image with a different name. Remember to change the file Format to JPEG, otherwise the file will be saved in .psd format (Photoshop)
- Alternatively you can use the command File, Save for Web, where you can at the same time resize and define the compression factor.
